Poem of the Week

Aquariums
Bergen Nelson

Blinded by a dripping mist
In the reflection of an aquarium
We see ourselves at last
Flooding the drain

The droplets sting my eyes
The sun fades
Staring down the hole
Some kid jumps in a puddle

With a shout of lightning
The clouds fall over the river
The drums pound, the faucets pour
A ship protrudes though the shrouds of fog

The storm begins, the ship is gone
Leaving me alone
Painting the cement with water
They come as sirens call

There was a spider climbing a pole
My friend smashed it
And I realize that if I had slipped,
While taking a step on to the steamboat
That would have been me
Drowning in the water
